HIV/AIDS is the most significant health and development challenge that sub-Saharan Africa has faced in the past decade. Recognizing the ever-increasing importance of the modern information and communication technologies (ICTs) as tools of transformation, development, information, education, and change; this study seeks to research and understand on how ICT tools have been used to address this region’s largest challenge to development and the corresponding outcome by learning from what is already being done in the region. Research and consultations will be carried out to determine the previous effort as well as the current status of application of ICTs for HIV/AIDS in five selected countries in the Eastern and Southern African Region.

Overall Objective
The overall objective of this study is to assess how information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been used in the five selected study countries to address health and development challenges brought about by HIV and AIDS.

Specific Objectives

  • Assess the level and extent of use of ICTs in the prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS health, psychosocial and economic effects, and establish how these initiatives are applying ICTs against HIV/AIDS at local, national and regional level.
  • Assess and evaluate the impact that the ICT initiatives have made in areas where ICT has been implemented for mitigation of HIV/AIDS.
  • Determine the existing gaps and unmet needs in application of ICTs in the fight against HIV/AIDS and recommend ways of strengthening this.
  • Document and disseminate key lessons learnt from using ICTs to address HIV/AIDS interventions to stakeholders.
