Project
title: Strengthening
Food Security in Rural Communities
in Sare and Kakelo, Nyanza Province,
Kenya through Production of
Crossbreed Chicken
Summary This
project aims at contributing
towards the improvement of food
security and reduction of malnutrition
in the selected rural communities
through introduction of crossbreed
chicken. The use of crossbreed
chicken was selected because
nearly every rural household
or village in Kenya already
keeps indigenous chicken but
which have poor yield both in
egg and meat production. The
project is funded by the African
Institute for Capacity Development
(AICAD). Data from the
research project will be compiled,
analyzed and disseminated widely
for improvement of poultry production
as a means of alleviating poverty
and malnutrition in other areas.

C. COMMUNITY
SUPPORT PROGRAM

Extending
a Helping Hand to Rosalie
CCBI
extends a helping hand to those
in need. In a society
in which people living with
HIV and AIDS are still heavily
stigmatized, life can be full
of tribulations, especially
if you are a woman whose husband
has died due to HIV/AIDS. Rosalie*
is familiar with such stigmatisation.
When her husband died four years
ago in Kakelo Location of Rachuonyo
District, her problems had just
began She
refused to welcome any of her
brothers-in-law to her home
to take the place of her husband
– the so-called wife inheritance
– according to the ways of her
people, the Luo of Nyanza Province
in western Kenya. Her reason?
She did not want to pass HIV
infection to another family
(the brothers-in-law were already
married).

 CCBI
targets to build partnership with the CBO with whom
it collaborates in a mutual and cooperative manner.
It provides technical support to community self help
groups that run income generating and counseling programs
which support widows, AIDS orphans and grandmothers.
CCBI evaluates programs of CBO’s (mid term and end program
evaluation), CCBI runs an AIDS Orphans Support Program
and pays fees and provides other basic needs for 12
orphans each year in various schools in Nyanza Province.
Health
Programs Aimed at Improving Community Health and Welfare CCBI
participates in various health programs in Kenya, especially
among the youth and the underprivileged communities
in remote and under-served segments of rural areas.
i)
Prevention and Management of STI/HIV/AIDS CCBI
carries out training of communities on quality management
of health services including * AIDS orphan programmes
and street children (CCBI supports 12 orphans) *
Training of the family members and community members
on HIV Home Based Care
ii)
Capacity building towards availability and accessibility
of food CCBI implements projects that are aimed
at enhancing the capacity of communities to improve
their environment, and improve their capability to increase
food production, especially among widows and orphans. *
Counseling of widows, youth and other community members *
Promotion of income generating activities and small
scale enterprises, and social welfare support * Advocacy
and promotion of indigenous knowledge and utilization
of traditional foods
iii)
Traditional issues in biodiversity and medicinal plants Through
these programs, we are reaching the communities and
empowering them towards prosperity. Furthermore
some CBO’s are linked to CCBI through a network facilitated
by the CCBI, while maintaining their autonomy and management.
Networking with CCBI gives communities discount in the
services we provide to them and helps in building trust.
Solid
Financial Management System All
our financial accounts are audited regularly therefore
Nanny program like other programs we have handled will
be well managed, including strict financial management
and controls (See attached letter from the NGO
Coordinating Bureau, a Government of Kenya body that
coordinates NGO activities in the country).
